LUT Summer Trainee - LENS Junior Research Assistant, Computational Engineering

Hello future LUT Summer Trainee!

Would you like to work at a university during summer 2026 and gain hands-on experience in research and course development in computational engineering? We are looking for eight LUT Summer Trainees to work as Summer Workers in the Department of Computational Engineering at the LUT School of Engineering Sciences (LENS).

The positions are in the Department of Computational Engineering at LUT University. The roles combine research work and course development tasks, offering a unique opportunity to build your computational and analytical skills while working closely with academic staff and research groups.

What will your work include

As a Summer Trainee, your tasks may include both research-related work and development of courses. Typical duties include contributing to courses such as Computational Spectroscopy, Mathematics, Quantum Computing, Computer Vision, Pattern Recognition and Machine Learning, Numerical Methods, and Numerical Methods for PDEs.

Your work may involve developing laboratory demonstrations, creating datasets or other supporting materials for courses, and supporting existing research projects within the department.

Research topics may cover areas such as inverse problems, discrete networks, generative models, continuum mechanical modelling for powder materials, environmental remote sensing, and real-time monitoring. The work is carried out under the supervision of Computational Engineering research groups.

What do we expect from you

You are a student of the Department of Computational Engineering with good academic performance. There is no strict requirement for a specific number of completed credits, as the requirements may vary depending on the position. Programming skills may be required depending on the specific tasks.

Depending on the role, the position requires either excellent proficiency in English or good skills in both English and Finnish.

You have analytical thinking skills, good teamwork abilities, and the capability to work independently when needed. An interest in research and in developing courses is considered an advantage.

What do we offer you

As a LUT Summer Trainee, you will work as part of active research teams and gain insight into academic research work and the tools used in it. Depending on the position, the work may include practical tasks in laboratories (for example in machine learning or computational spectroscopy) or collaboration with international research teams.

Your main work location will be at a LUT campus Lappeenranta or Lahti (campus to be specified). Some tasks may allow partial hybrid or remote work as agreed with the supervisor.

You can start the position in May and work approximately three months. We expect you to work for the full agreed summer employment period.

The salary for a research assistant is based on the number of completed study credits (ECTS) at the time the employment contract is signed and ranges from EUR 2,190 to EUR 2,530 per month. The weekly working time is 36 hours and 15 minutes.

At the beginning of the summer, you will participate in a joint Summer Trainee orientation day and get to know other LUT Summer Trainees.
