Background
UNCAN-Connect is a five-year initiative to transform how cancer research is conducted across Europe. Funded by the Horizon Europe Research and Innovation programme, the project brings together 53 partner organizations from 19 European countries to co-develop UNCAN.eu, a decentralized collaborative platform enabling secure, ethical, and interoperable access to cancer data. UNCAN-Connect will validate its platform through use cases targeting six cancer types - paediatric, lymphoid, pancreatic, ovarian, lung, and prostate cancer, and will promote open access to cancer data while respecting patients rights and privacy.
The School of Law at Åbo Akademi is involved with a share in the large project. Our task is to evaluate the use of AI-tools in cancer diagnostics from the point of view Trustworthy AI (TAI) and develop a standard operating procedure (SOP). The EU project will focus on two parts, federated cancer data spaces and AI tools for data analysis. Our work will be on the second part, assessing the AI trustworthiness of the tools. This means initially, to define a clarifying standard operating process for the use case partners. While we have long experience of working on Trustworthy AI, we need some additional expertise in multi-modal data processing (i.e., AI using omics, image, text, and other relevant laboratory data for cancer problems). Hence, we are not going to be working on the clinical integration or evaluation but rather start assessing the research experiments in the six use cases in terms of data and models.
Description of the position
The above-mentioned work tasks are related to doctoral studies and dissertation with a view to completing the degree of the Doctor of the Laws (LL.D.). The main task of this position is to conduct research on Trustworthy AI mainly from the point of view of the law, but without excluding linkages to other relevant fields. This includes the collection, analysis, and management of information and data, collaborating with and following up the six use case partners, developing the standard operating procedure, communicating research findings and writing reports and scientific articles and/or a monographic dissertation. The recruited person will collaborate with the consortium partners and advance his/her own LL.D. research on the topic and contribute to the teaching at the School of Law within ones own research area.
The position is located in Turku/Åbo, Finland.
