Hull Structural Designer

We are Helsinki Shipyard - celebrating 160 years of shipbuilding excellence. Since 1865, we have been designing, building, and commissioning tailor-made, high-class passenger vessels and icebreakers for extreme conditions. We proudly continue the legacy of Helsinki's own Shipyard, right in the heart of Helsinki.

With us, you get to design and build the ships under one roof from start to finish, in close collaboration with our customers. Our specialty lies in vessels that operate on the polar seas, but we can build everything from smaller yachts to complex multi-purpose icebreakers. To provide you with some perspective, we've built 50% of the world's icebreakers - without us it would be hard to navigate in the icy seas!

We are now beginning construction on a new heavy icebreaker for the Canadian government. The vessel will be constructed in Helsinki before being completed at Davie's shipyard in Quebec by 2030. Read more about the project here!

We are looking for Hull Structural Designers to join our experienced design team. Our growing team currently consists of 20 designers. Around two-thirds of the team focuses on basic design and calculations, while the remaining designers focus on production design and production support. You can focus on either area based on your skills and interests. As the team continues to grow, there will also be new opportunities to take responsibility for areas that interest you.

The team usually works on two vessels at the same time, which provides you with diverse projects and valuable learning opportunities.

As a designer, you will work with a ship throughout its entire design and construction lifecycle. A typical workday includes developing design solutions in collaboration with other designers and departments, as well as with production specialists and the production team. You will also participate in project organization meetings and report on modelling progress.

Your work is largely independent, but strong teamwork skills are also required when working as part of the hull design team and the shipyard's extensive design organization. The main design tools used are Aveva Marine and AutoCAD.

To succeed in this role, you need:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Engineering, for example in Naval architecture

  • Experience in strength calculations and structural design, either from work or studies

  • Experience in designing marine vessels

  • Proficiency with AutoCAD

  • Good communication skills in English

  • Experience in Napa Steel or Aveva Marine is seen as an advantage.

"The ship project takes from 2-3 years, and you can literally see the completion of the ship from plans to the finished ship ready for her maiden voyage outside one's own window. It's always a moving moment when a ship leaves for her home port"

- Mohamed Elameen, Ship Theory Engineer
