The Solid-State Battery Materials research team led by Dr. Amandeep Singh, part of the Ceramic Materials research group (Head – Professor Erkki Levänen), is inviting applications for a postdoctoral researcher position at Tampere University. The research group consists of 15 members, including 4 Senior members, with core research areas being battery materials, plasticity in ceramics, and 3D printing of ceramics. Join us at Tampere University in driving the green transition and revolutionizing Europe's battery technology landscape.

Job description

Solid-state Battery Materials research team is looking for a highly motivated Postdoctoral researcher in the field of solid-state battery research to contribute to two cutting-edge European Union Horizon Europe funded projects: SOLVE and HyLiST. Both projects are at the forefront of developing next-generation (Gen4b) battery technologies.

The successful candidate will work collaboratively across both projects, contributing to research and development activities related to material optimization, cell component manufacturing, and the testing of solid-state battery performance. This role involves intense collaboration with international partners and the dissemination of results within the EU battery landscape.

The responsibilities for this Postdoctoral Research Fellow position are multifaceted, combining research leadership, project management, technical research, and academic supervision/teaching.

On the research and technical front, the role requires conducting advanced electrochemical characterization, including cell cycling (charge/discharge testing) and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS), performing comprehensive post-mortem analysis of battery cells to understand degradation mechanisms, and utilizing various materials and cell characterization techniques, such as Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS).

Key duties also involve project management and communication tasks, such as leading and coordinating internal project meetings within the EU consortia, preparing and delivering high-quality scientific publications and presentations for project dissemination and conferences, and representing the project in ongoing European Union initiatives.

Finally, the successful candidate will also handle funding and supervision responsibilities by contributing to the university's research goals through actively writing and preparing new external funding proposals, guiding and mentoring doctoral students in their research activities, and assisting with teaching responsibilities related to materials science courses focused on battery technologies.

Requirements

  • The candidate must possess doctoral degree (PhD) in any or the following fields: Materials Science Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, Mechanical Engineering or any closely related field.
  • Expertise in battery technology, particularly solid-state batteries or related energy storage systems.

Additionally, strong background in electrochemistry and good experimental skills in materials and cell characterization techniques and post-mortem analysis (SEM-EDS, XPS, XRD, TGA-DTA, EIS, cyclic voltammetry) with long experience will be considered an asset. Experience of working in glovebox and in coin and pouch cell assembly and handling would be necessary skills for this position. Strong Experience working in EU projects will also be considered an asset.

The ideal candidate must be proficient in the use of English language (both written and spoken). The candidate must also be comfortable with working in an intercultural and inter-disciplinary research team. We hope that you are a proactive team player who possesses a self-driven mindset and wants to achieve high goals, and that you are detail-oriented, excited to publish results, and handle managerial task too.
