We are Helsinki Shipyard - celebrating 160 years of shipbuilding excellence. Since 1865, we have been designing, building, and commissioning tailor-made, high-class passenger vessels and icebreakers for extreme conditions. We proudly continue the legacy of Helsinki's own Shipyard, right in the heart of Helsinki.

With us, you get to design and build the ships under one roof from start to finish, in close collaboration with our customers. Our specialty lies in vessels that operate on the polar seas, but we can build everything from smaller yachts to complex multi-purpose icebreakers. We've built over 50% of the world's icebreakers - without us it would be hard to navigate in the icy seas!

We are now beginning construction on a new heavy icebreaker for the Canadian government. The vessel will be constructed in Helsinki before being completed at Davie's shipyard in Quebec by 2030.

We are currently seeking Project Engineers to join our team of 17 professionals in the Naval Architecture department. This team is responsible for the conceptual design of specialized vessels ranging from icebreakers to passenger ships. The team develops initial vessel concepts during the sales phase and collaborates with design teams to finalize the vessel's design during the construction phase. The typical length of the initial concept development phase is from a few months to a year.

We are looking for several Project Engineers, and we can tailor the role to match your experience, strengths and interests. Depending on your experience, you can take the lead on projects from day one, or grow into the role with us.

As a Project Engineer, you will play a central role in both the sales and construction phases of ship projects. Your responsibilities and tasks include:

  • Supporting the sales team with concept design and technical-economic documentation.

  • Developing vessel concepts and defining performance targets.

  • Preparing technical specifications and appendixes as part of the contract material

  • After the contract is made, coordinating projects technically together with the Technical Manager.

  • Maintaining project documentation and monitoring performance targets.

  • Acting as an expert and coordinating on regulatory matters

  • Participating in project and design meetings, and supporting inspections and commissioning.

To succeed in this role:

  • You hold a Master's degree in maritime engineering or another relevant field.

  • You have at least 2 years of experience in the shipbuilding industry, but, as mentioned, we have senior positions available if you are already a more seasoned professional.

  • You thrive in team environments and have strong communication skills.

The following skills are seen as an advantage:

  • Experience in design software, like AutoCAD or NAPA.

  • Experience in naval/stability calculations.

  • Experience in ship system design.

Helsinki Shipyard is now in a phase of transformation and growth. With a strong order book and fascinating, diverse projects, we're shaping the future of specialized shipbuilding. Now's the time to join us and find your place in this growth journey."

-Timo Yrjövuori, Head of Naval Architecture

Why you should join us:

  • Our dynamic work environment and diverse projects will offer you the chance to expand your knowledge and learn something new every day

  • We have offices in Helsinki, Turku, and Pori. We support hybrid work arrangements while also working together at the office on a weekly basis.

  • Sustainability is central to us - we participate in joint Helsinki sea monitoring, where the quality and harmful substances in the water are monitored.

Ready to make an impact?

If you are a motivated and skilled engineer with a passion for innovation and a commitment to excellence, we would love to hear from you. Your contributions will directly impact the performance, efficiency, and comfort of vessels operating in diverse marine environments.
