Play a key role in designing and integrating the next-generation train control system for the Helsinki Metro and join Kaupunkiliikenne as a System Engineer!
Due to increasing passenger volumes, a significant upgrade program will be carried out in the Helsinki Metro over the course of this decade to increase passenger capacity. The program aims to ensure reliable operations by developing the metro's traffic control systems, thereby enabling more frequent metro services than at present. You can read more about the project here.
What will you be doing?
We are looking for an experienced System Engineer to join the METKA project team at Kaupunkiliikenne. In this role, you will be responsible for system-level design and integration of a new communications-based train control system for the Helsinki Metro. Acting as a system integrator, you will ensure that subsystems delivered by multiple suppliers form a safe, compliant, and fully functional whole.
The role has a strong focus on system-level design and requirements allocation, particularly during the early project phases. You will define how operational, safety, and assurance requirements are distributed across interconnected subsystems, lead technical discussions with suppliers, and coordinate system design activities throughout the project lifecycle from design to verification, testing, and approvals. System assurance is an integral part of the role, including RAMS (Reliability, Availability, Maintainability, Safety), cybersecurity, and other assurance aspects that support system-level decision-making.
What makes you a great fit?
You enjoy solving complex, safety-critical system challenges and working at the intersection of technology, people, and processes. You are comfortable taking ownership of system-level decisions, leading technical discussions with different stakeholders, and translating high-level operational, safety, and assurance requirements into structured, implementable system designs.
We expect you to have:
- At least five years of experience as a System Engineer or in a similar role within infrastructure, automation, or other safety-critical industrial environments
- A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Automation, Computer Science, or a related field
- Expertise in system architecture, system integration, and requirements management
- Experience working with multiple suppliers and leading system-level coordination across multidisciplinary stakeholders
- Good English language skills for professional communication; Finnish skills are considered an advantage
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and documentation skills
We consider as an asset:
- Prior experience with railway RAMS or system assurance activities in a regulated rail environment
- Experience in railway, metro, rolling stock, or other safety-critical transport systems
- Background in automation, signalling, or industrial control systems with defined safety levels
- Familiarity with risk management, quality assurance, and verification processes
- Experience using tools such as Jira, Confluence, or requirements management systems
We can offer you:
- The opportunity to work on a unique and highly impactful project whose effects will be visible in everyday life across the Helsinki metropolitan area for decades
- A work community where people genuinely enjoy their work and long careers are common
- An independent and responsible expert role with strong support from your team and manager
- Flexible working hours and the possibility to combine remote and office-based work
- Good employment benefits, including a commuter travel benefit, an employer-subsidized lunch, discounts on sports and cultural activities, and many other perks
Practicalities:
This is a full-time and permanent position and you will be employed directly at Kaupunkiliikenne. The preferred starting date for the position is as soon as possible and the person selected for the position will be subject to a security clearance (Act on Security Clearances 726/2014) prior to the final conclusion of the employment contract. The role offers the possibility for partial remote work, but we hope you will primarily work at the Kalasatama office as part of a close-knit project team. The salary is determined in accordance with the Finnish Railway Sector Collective Agreement (job grade 25). The position-specific base salary is approximately 4,000-4,200 € per month, complemented by a personal performance-based component and company-wide incentive schemes.
