Process Development Engineer

About your role

Fermion Oy, a subsidiary of Orion Corporation and a leading developer and manufacturer of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), is seeking a motivated Process Development Engineer to join our Process R&D team in Espoo. The role involves the development, scale-up, transfer to manufacturing sites, and validation of small-molecule API processes at R&D in Fermion. This position is a fixed-term parental leave substitution and will last for approximately 14 months requiring mostly on-site presence in Espoo.

Your key responsibilities

The tasks of a Process Development Engineer involve the development and manufacturing of APIs and their intermediates at pilot and production scale in Fermion's plants. You will design experiments and supervise laboratory work, assess the feasibility and safety of processes, prepare plans and manufacturing instructions, participate in design meetings and risk assessments, prepare, guide, and monitor campaigns at the plant, maintain communication with various stakeholders, and prepare reports. The products you will work with include drug candidates at different stages of development as well as generic APIs. You will also participate in projects with external customers.

Our expectations

To succeed in this role, you should have:

  • A relevant university degree, e.g., M.Sc. or Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering or Process Engineering
  • Knowledge of chemical industry unit operations (reactions, extractions, distillations, filtrations, crystallizations, drying, and milling)
  • Ability to supervise process operators and laboratory technicians
  • Flexibility in working hours (e.g., process transfers to plants) and willingness to travel to Orion's different sites
  • Good oral and written communication skills in Finnish and English
  • Strong collaboration skills and adaptability
  • Organizational ability, logical thinking, and initiative

Additional expertise in a specific area, such as crystallization, milling, or process modeling and simulation, or other technologies used in industrial API manufacturing, is considered an advantage.

Unit description 

Fermion Oy is a subsidiary of Orion and develops and produces all active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) for Orion's in-house developed innovative medicines and for some of Orion's branded, generic and animal health products. Fermion also develops and produces a series of generic APIs for various indications and is active as CDMO, contract development and manufacturing organization, to serve other pharmaceutical companies. The company has produced APIs in Hanko, Finland since 1973, and the plant currently has personnel of 180. The company's Oulu plant commenced operations back in 1964 and currently employs more than 100 professionals. Fermion's head office is in Espoo where R&D, S&M and part of QM personnel are located. Altogether approximately 400 professionals work for Fermion.
