We are looking for a Reliability Engineer to join the Maintenance team at UPM’s Biorefinery in Lappeenranta.
Greetings from your future manager
“I am looking for a reliability engineer for my team who wants to do meaningful work and see the results of their own efforts in the daily operations of the Lappeenranta biorefinery. In this role, you will have a direct impact on the operational reliability of production, develop the work together with a skilled team, and grow your own expertise in a unique environment. We work closely together, supporting each other and in good spirits – without forgetting a twinkle in our eye.
We offer a versatile and responsible position on the shores of Lake Saimaa, in a biorefinery whose development and operations we can genuinely be proud of.” – Markus Varis, Maintenance Manager
What you will do
As a Reliability Engineer, you will play a key role in improving the reliability, availability, and lifecycle performance of process equipment, so production stays stable, safe, and predictable. You will lead equipment criticality classification, convert analytical findings into practical, risk‑based maintenance actions, and run thorough root‑cause analyses when issues occur.
This role suits someone who enjoys structured, analytical work in a complex industrial environment: staying calm under pressure, noticing early warning signals, and having the tenacity to work through complex technical documentation and data until the solution is clear.
Your key responsibilities include:
- Monitoring and analyzing equipment condition in close cooperation with operations
- Investigating disturbances and equipment issues and systematically drive them to root cause and sustainable resolution
- Planning and supporting shutdowns and maintenance stops from early preparation through safe execution and follow‑up
- Coordinating and supervising service providers to ensure high technical quality, schedule adherence, and safety compliance
- Keep maintenance instructions and documentation clear, accurate, and continuously up to date
- Contributing to occupational safety work and participate actively in risk assessments and hazard elimination
- Supporting the evaluation and implementation of maintenance‑related investment and improvement projects
Who you are
- You have a relevant degree (e.g., B.Eng./M.Sc. in mechanical or process engineering, or similar)
- You have knowledge of different NDT methods and hands‑on experience applying them in failure analysis and condition assessment
- You have experience using maintenance management systems
- You have strong IT skills and confidence working with technical data, reports, and structured documentation
- You have hands-on understanding of maintenance work and rotating and static industrial equipment
- You are familiarity with materials and equipment used in demanding industrial process environments
- You have excellent Finnish skills and good written and spoken English
Experience in the following areas is considered an asset:
- Familiarity with RCM (Reliability‑Centered Maintenance) and RCA methods and tools
- Familiarity with reliability modelling, risk‑based maintenance planning and related tools
- Experience with industrial shutdowns, turnarounds, and/or technical investment projects
You succeed in this role by putting safety first, taking ownership, and approaching challenges with curiosity and a solution mindset. You plan your work well and communicate clearly with different stakeholders. You have the patience and persistence to work through complex, detail-heavy topics until they are truly understood and improved for the long term.
This is what we offer to you
