The role
As a Solution Architect, you own end-to-end solution architecture for business initiatives and act as a bridge between business and technology. You ensure solutions are well governed, scalable, secure and aligned with Enterprise Architecture principles across applications, integrations, data and infrastructure.
Your responsibility area consists of VR‑owned and developed solutions as well as externally provided service‑based solutions (including SaaS, IaaS, and PaaS) delivered by VR's vendors. You will work across multiple businesses and customer segments, covering both B2C and B2B contexts. These include Long Distance Traffic, City Traffic, Logistics, Fleet Care, and related capabilities that directly or indirectly shape the customer experience across VR.
What you will work on
In your day-to-day work, you will:
- Collaborate closely with business stakeholders to discuss ongoing and upcoming initiatives
- Gather, analyse and translate business requirements into clear and actionable architecture documentation
- Guide and plan implementations together with Technical Architects, Lead Developers and Principal Developers across multiple systems
- Make and document architectural decisions and trade-offs, balancing cost, scalability, non-functional requirements, maintainability and reusability
- Govern solution architecture through reviews and implementation oversight, ensuring alignment with agreed architectures
When not focused on new initiatives, you take a broader view of the system landscape:
- Define, analyse and validate the roles and responsibilities of systems and system components
- Ensure alignment with Enterprise Architecture principles and technology direction
- Drive initiatives to modernise and renew systems where needed
- Contribute to domain and enterprise architecture roadmaps, including resilience and disaster recovery approaches
Technical risk management and continuity
As part of your role, you are responsible for ensuring that security, continuity, and regulatory requirements are reflected in solution architectures. This includes:
- Incorporating applicable cybersecurity and regulatory requirements (such as NIS2 and PCI DSS) into architectural decisions
- Ensuring business continuity and disaster recovery considerations are addressed at an architectural level, including availability, resilience, recovery objectives, and failover patterns
- Supporting development teams in implementing security and continuity requirements, in close collaboration with Application Security specialists and the central security team, including the CISO function
- Facilitating threat‑modelling sessions, together with the Security team and development teams, to identify technical security risks and ensure mitigations are reflected in the architecture and implementation
- Supporting internal and external compliance audits
What we expect from you
- 5+ years of experience in solution/system architecture for modern digital services
- Strong software development background (preferably in the Java ecosystem)
- Experience with microservices and event-driven architectures
- Experience with architectural governance from design through implementation
- Experience designing solutions in cloud-based environments (AWS)
- Customer-oriented mindset and strong collaboration skills
- Great communication skills in English and Finnish; Swedish is a plus
- Experience in public transport or other large-scale, business-critical environments is an advantage

- Have a security‑oriented mindset and previous experience with technical risk management practices, including identifying, assessing, and mitigating risks as part of architecture and design work
- Have worked in regulated or business-critical environments (e.g. critical infrastructure/high availability) or scaled architectures across multiple domains
- Interested in AI capabilities and the potential of LLMs in software development and as a strategic business capability
- Use AI in daily work (analysis, documentation, design reviews)
- Able to evaluate and incorporate AI-driven capabilities into solutions in a pragmatic, value-focused and responsible way
