Wärtsilä is an innovative technology company known for being a forerunner in the Marine and Energy markets. Every day, we – Wärtsilians - put our hearts and minds into turning Wärtsilä's purpose of enabling sustainable societies through innovation in technology and services into reality. Our ultimate aim is to provide increased value to both our customers and society. New, game-changing ideas and continuous improvement have been part of our DNA since 1834. Together, we can create new business opportunities and more sustainable future that we can all be proud of.

We want to transition the world towards a decarbonised and sustainable future. By pushing the boundaries of engineering and technology, we can make it work. We are always on the lookout for future-oriented talent – want to join the ride?

We are now looking for a

Systems Engineer – Modelling & Simulation

to strengthen our Systems Reliability team and contribute to the development of our system modelling and simulation capabilities.

This is a permanent position, with preferred locations in Trieste (Italy), Vaasa (Finland), or Turku (Finland). Some travel (approximately 10%) is required, though most meetings are virtual. We also offer flexible hybrid work arrangements.

What you will be doing

This role combines strong system simulation capability with practical competence in Systems Engineering and Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE).

You will bridge system architecture and engineering simulation, ensuring that simulation models are systematically connected to requirements, functions, interfaces, parameters and verification activities.

You will develop system models and analyses to understand system behaviour, evaluate design alternatives, identify technical risks and support verification and technical decision-making in complex, multidisciplinary engineering challenges.

As an engineering enabler and specialist partner, you will bring Systems Engineering and simulation expertise into product and technology development, working across engineering disciplines and perspectives.

As Systems Engineer – Modelling & Simulation, your work will focus on these responsibilities:

  • Develop and apply system-level simulation models, analyses and trade-off studies to help engineering teams evaluate system performance, design alternatives and technical risks.
  • Apply Systems Engineering and MBSE methods to connect requirements, functions, system architecture, interfaces, simulation and verification.
  • Provide modelling, simulation and system analysis expertise to development projects, working together with product teams, technical experts and other engineering disciplines.
  • Contribute to the development and reuse of system models, reference architectures, simulation methods and engineering practices, and share know-how that strengthens Systems Engineering and simulation capabilities across the engineering organisation.

To be successful in this role, we expect you to have:

  • MSc or equivalent degree in Mechanical Engineering, Energy Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Strong understanding of physical system modelling and simulation, preferably involving complex multidisciplinary systems.
  • Experience in system-level or 1D simulation using tools such as GT-SUITE, Simcenter Amesim, MATLAB/Simulink, Modelica/Dymola or similar.
  • Good understanding of Systems Engineering principles and technical processes, such as the requirement definition, architecture definition and system analysis processes, to support system verification.
  • Experience with, or strong motivation to develop competence in, Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) and a modelling language such as SysML.
  • Ability to translate engineering problems into models, simulations and system-level analyses.
  • Ability to collaborate across engineering disciplines and communicate complex technical topics clearly.
  • Good analytical and problem-solving skills combined with a practical engineering mindset.
  • Good written and spoken English.

Considered an advantage

  • Experience with internal combustion engines, power generation, marine propulsion, energy systems or other complex physical products.
  • A PhD in a relevant field, particularly system modelling, simulation or Systems Engineering.
  • Experience developing or validating simulation models against physical measurements or test data.
  • Experience with SysML modelling tools and requirements management environments.
  • Knowledge of scripting or automation, particularly Python or MATLAB.

The annual salary range for Italy for this role is 40,000 EUR – 60,000 EUR in accordance with the salary provisions in the National Collective Labor Agreement for workers in the metalworking and plant installation industry (CCNL Metalmeccanico). At Wärtsilä, we are committed to fair and transparent pay. This range reflects the expected compensation for the role, based on market data and our job architecture. The final salary offered will depend on factors such as the scope and responsibilities of the role, the required competencies, and your relevant education, skills, and experience. We also take internal equity into account to ensure fairness across our organisation.
