2 Project Researchers, Machine learning

We are now looking for two

Project researchers

to join us in the Center for Machine Vision and Signal Analysis (CMVS), Computer Science and Engineering unit at the Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering (ITEE), to work on new computer vision and machine learning methods for following positions:

1) Video-based face synthesis with new generative models

2) Hyper spatiotemporal multimodal sensing for tree/forest data analysis

CMVS is a creative, open and internationally attractive research center, combining the expertise of University of Oulu computer vision and biosignal analysis scientists. We have achieved ground-breaking research results in many areas of its activity, including texture analysis, facial and behavior analysis, 3D computer vision, energy-efficient architectures for embedded systems, and biomedical engineering.

About the job

In the first position, you would work in the field of face analysis and machine learning, carrying out the following tasks:

  • Collect, annotate and process multi-modal data including videos, audio and bio-signals with group members and collaborators;
  • Implement different methods and develop new data processing and machine learning algorithms for face analysis and synthesis from multimodal data;
  • Analyze the experimental results, be able to identify problems and adjust to new solutions;
  • Collaborate with other team members working on the same project or the same subject;
  • Write research papers and technical reports;
  • Travel to other countries for collaborations according to project needs.

In the second position, you would work at the intersection of computer vision and remote sensing, carrying out the following tasks:

  • Process high-dimensional spatial-temporal point cloud data including trees and forests with collaborators;
  • Design and develop unsupervised learning algorithms to analyze spatial-temporal point cloud data, specifically targeting the detection of abnormal tree dynamics and the prediction of future structural trends;
  • Explore and model the linkage between data-driven temporal anomalies and biological processes, including tree growth patterns and phenological dynamics;
  • Collaborate closely with multidisciplinary team members on joint research projects and related initiatives;
  • Publish high-quality research papers, technical reports, and project documentation;
  • Undertake international travel to facilitate global collaborations and project activities as required.

Both positions have the possibility to undertake study courses related to the subject field as a doctoral researcher.

Who are you?

We require from you:

  • a Master's or doctoral degree in computer science, electrical engineering, or a related area.
  • Good spoken and written English

In order to succeed and enjoy the role, we also appreciate:

  • Previous experience and publications on computer vision, machine learning algorithm design, or a related area.
  • Strong mathematical and programming skills with C/C++/Matlab/python
  • For the 2nd position, earlier experience in tree and forest data analysis.

Salary

The position is fixed-term until 29 February 2028, starting as soon as possible.

The salary is based on levels 6-9 of the demand level chart for expert and support staff at Finnish universities. In addition, a salary component based on personal performance will be paid (up to 50% of the job-specific component).

The demand level of the position and assigned tasks will be defined based on the selected candidate's qualifications. Early-stage researchers are positioned at level 6, with an estimated starting salary of approximately €2,800-€3,000 per month. Candidates holding a doctoral degree can be positioned up to level 9, with an approximate starting salary of €3,900-€4,200 per month.

A trial period of 6 months is applied to the position.

How to apply?

Interested? If yes, please apply by 15 August, 2026 through our recruitment system.

The application should be written in English and include the following:

Later in the recruitment process, the candidates may be asked to provide contact information for two (2) referees and copies of their degree certificates.

Eligible applicants who best fit the profile expected for the position will be invited to an on-site or remote interview.
