Material Standard Manager

We are Helsinki Shipyard - celebrating 160 years of shipbuilding excellence. Since 1865, we have been designing, building, and commissioning tailor-made, high-class passenger vessels and icebreakers for extreme conditions. We proudly continue the legacy of Helsinki's own Shipyard, right in the heart of Helsinki.

With us, you get to design and build the ships under one roof from start to finish, in close collaboration with our customers. Our specialty lies in vessels that operate on the polar seas, but we can build everything from smaller yachts to complex multi-purpose icebreakers. We've built over 50% of the world's icebreakers - without us it would be hard to navigate in the icy seas!

We are now constructing a new heavy icebreaker for the Canadian government. The vessel will be built in Helsinki before being completed at Davie's shipyard in Quebec by 2030. Additionally, the design of two icebreakers for the US Coast Guard has begun and the production of the first vessel will start this summer.

Since November 2023, Helsinki Shipyard has been a part of Group Davie together with SATA Shipbuilding in Pori and Chantier Davie in Lévis, Quebec.

We are now looking for an experienced professional to take ownership of shipyard standard materials and their lifecycle management in Aveva ERM and other systems. In this role, you will ensure that the right materials are defined, available, and usable across all design projects and departments. The role does not include direct line management responsibility, but you will lead a team of 1-3 Material Administrators, who will do the administration work alongside their design duties in different parts of our design organization.

In this role, you will ensure that the right materials are clearly defined, readily available, and effectively utilized across all projects and departments, including design, logistics, and production, to support seamless collaboration and operational efficiency.

In this role, you get to:

  • Own and manage shipyard standard materials throughout their full lifecycle

  • Maintain and develop material master data (e.g. specifications, pricing, suppliers, lifecycle)

  • Decide which materials are approved for use and manage their standardization

  • Work closely with suppliers and internal stakeholders across engineering and procurement

  • Lead a team of Material Administrators in a matrix organization

  • Continuously improve material management practices and processes

To thrive in this role, we would hope you:

  • Have experience in the shipbuilding or manufacturing infustry industry (shipyard experience is strongly preferred, but not mandatory).

  • Understanding of materials used in marine or heavy industry

  • Experience working with material data, standards, or procurement processes

  • Ability to take ownership of processes and work across teams

  • Strong collaboration and communication skills

Why you'll thrive here:

  • Our tight-knit Design team values each individual's impact on projects.

  • Sustainability is central to us - we participate in joint Helsinki sea monitoring, where the quality and harmful substances in the water are monitored.

  • An environment where you can thrive, learn, and grow your expertise.

  • Flexible working options - based in Helsinki or Turku, with hybrid work possibilities. Our team works flexibly, combining remote work with 1-3 office days per week depending on tasks and project phase.

Ready to make an impact?

If you are a motivated and skilled designer with a passion for innovation and a commitment to excellence, we would love to hear from you. Your contributions will directly impact the performance, efficiency, and comfort of vessels operating in diverse marine environments.
