Research Assistant

to join us in the Oulu Mining School at the Faculty of Technology

Oulu Mining School (OMS) is an education and research unit in engineering and geosciences at the University of Oulu, which significantly strengthens the University's expertise in natural resources and sustainability. Oulu Mining School gathers core disciplines of the mining value chain at the geosciences, geophysics, mining engineering, and mineral processing sectors.

About the job

The candidate will research projects related to data processing and modelling of geophysical seismic interferometry, enhanced by machine learning and deep learning.

The position is to advance geophysical data processing using structured workflows, investigating and incorporating as part of the Master's thesis or Diploma research. The geophysical data have been collected in several seismic surveys on tailings facilities in the HE Mine.io project.

In addition, the candidate will assist with the preparation of sensors, instruments, and equipment for laboratory and field scale deployment and decommissioning (e.g., using geophysical methods such as passive seismics).

  • Ongoing Master's studies 
  • You must be competent in data analysis and research, and know about machine learning and deep learning workflows.
  • Be able to use programming languages like Python.
  • Fluent spoken and written English abilities

Salary

The position is fixed-term (6 months) starting from 01.04.2026 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The salary will be based on the OV01 level of the demand level chart for teaching and research staff at Finnish universities. In addition, a salary component based on personal work performance will be paid (maximum of 50 % of the job-specific component). Starting gross salary will be approximately. 2300-2600 EUR per month (before taxes). A trial period of 6 months is applied to the position.
