Machinery Concept Engineer

We are Helsinki Shipyard - celebrating 160 years of shipbuilding excellence. Since 1865, we have been designing, building, and commissioning tailor-made, high-class passenger vessels and icebreakers for extreme conditions. We proudly continue the legacy of Helsinki's own Shipyard, right in the heart of Helsinki.

With us, you get to design and build the ships under one roof from start to finish, in close collaboration with our customers. Our specialty lies in vessels that operate on the polar seas, but we can build everything from smaller yachts to complex multi-purpose icebreakers. We've built over 50% of the world's icebreakers - without us it would be hard to navigate in the icy seas!

We are now beginning construction on a new heavy icebreaker for the Canadian government. The vessel will be constructed in Helsinki before being completed at Davie's shipyard in Quebec by 2030.

Since November 2023, Helsinki Shipyard has been a part of Group Davie together with SATA Shipbuilding in Pori and Chantier Davie in Levie, Quebec.

We are currently seeking a Machinery Concept Engineer to join our team of 20 professionals in the Naval Architecture department. Our team is responsible for the conceptual design of specialized vessels ranging from icebreakers to passenger ships. The team develops initial vessel concepts during the sales phase and collaborates with design teams to finalize the vessel's design during the construction phase. The typical length of the initial concept development phase is from a few months to a year.

The Machinery Concept Engineer works in close cooperation with the Project Manager, Project Engineer, and other team members during the development of the vessel concept. The main responsibilities of the Machinery Concept Engineer include the definition of main machinery and propulsion equipment, as well as the development of machinery and propulsion arrangements.

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Analysis of technical solutions, taking into account environmental aspects, performance, and cost to find optimal solutions for the vessel concept

  • Machinery specification and related diagram development during the sales phase

  • Other technical studies, such as SRTP and FMEA

  • Follow-up on novel technologies, future fuels, and rule development

  • Participation in customer meetings during concept development

To succeed in this role:

  • You enjoy working with others, share knowledge openly, and believe that great ships are built by great teams.

  • You hold a Master's degree in maritime engineering or another relevant field.

  • You have experience in ship system design and related technologies.

  • You have the capability to engage in broad discussions with customers and internal teams to identify and develop optimal solutions.

Helsinki Shipyard is now in a phase of transformation and growth. With a strong order book and fascinating, diverse projects, we're shaping the future of specialized shipbuilding. Now's the time to join us and find your place in this growth journey."

-Timo Yrjövuori, Head of Naval Architecture

Why you should join us:

  • Our dynamic work environment and diverse projects will offer you the chance to expand your knowledge and learn something new every day

  • Flexible working options - based in Helsinki, Turku, or Pori, with hybrid work possibilities. Our team members work both remotely and on-site at the office, depending on the tasks and project phase.

  • Sustainability is central to us - we participate in joint Helsinki sea monitoring, where the quality and harmful substances in the water are monitored.

Ready to make an impact?

If you are a motivated and skilled engineer with a passion for innovation and a commitment to excellence, we would love to hear from you. Your contributions will directly impact the performance, efficiency, and comfort of vessels operating in diverse marine environments.
