Sustainability Specialist

Join us and take your career to the next level

We are looking for a hands-on Sustainability Specialist to join our purpose-driven team for a 12-month maternity cover.

This is an exciting opportunity to help us accelerate our transition to a more sustainable, resource-efficient future. Your mission will be broad and meaningful: supporting our sustainability roadmap with a focus on all areas of ESG (Environment, Social and Governance) and transparent reporting. You'll be a vital link between our suppliers and technical experts, working hand-in-hand with our Sustainability colleagues in Helsinki and Ljungby, and our sourcing colleagues all over the world. If you are motivated by real-world sustainability actions and collaborative teamwork, this is the place for you!

We offer a fixed-term contract that empowers you to turn ambitious sustainability strategies into practical, measurable action. This role is perfect for someone who enjoys working with various internal and external stakeholders to contribute to real emissions reductions and tangible improvement actions. You will also contribute to the development of a strategy to mitigate and improve Human Rights and other social risks in the supply chain, and follow up the development of sustainability related legislation (e.g. CBAM, EU battery regulation, CSDDD, EU Deforestation Regulation) and contribute to related development projects to ensure compliance.

From day one, you will gain exposure to the forefront of sustainability - working with suppliers to ensure we obtain goods and services ethically and sustainably considering both environmental and social matters - within a collaborative and purpose-driven team. This is a well-defined opportunity to take ownership and responsibility while creating a visible, lasting impact across our value chain.

This position is based at our Helsinki headquarters, where we maintain a hybrid work model, requiring a minimum of three days per week on-site to ensure seamless collaboration with our local team.

What are your key responsibilities:

  • Supplier Engagement Programme: You will support the programme by quantitative analysis of supplier engagement data, preparing summaries and feedback towards suppliers, finding synergies, opportunities and data gaps and facilitating supplier workshops and coordinating communications towards suppliers.
  • Supplier Sustainability Self Assessment: You will reach out to suppliers to complete the self assessment, work with suppliers to improve their scores and improve their overall sustainability practices.
  • Supplier Energy Transition & Support: You will guide suppliers through the transition to renewable electricity to reduce Scope 3 emissions, while managing the collection and analysis of energy data, improvement plans, and support for SBTi processes and emissions calculations.
  • Sustainable Material & Process Evaluation: You will evaluate the introduction of biodegradable, long-lasting hydraulic oils by analysing environmental benefits and regulatory aspects, while coordinating testing data and internal assessments between suppliers and technical teams.
  • Hazardous Substances & Responsible Minerals management: You will support the supplier outreach to ensure Kalmar's compliance to relevant regulations (e.g. REACH, ROHS, POPS, TSCA, PFAS) and the phasing out of Substances of Very High COncern (SVHCs); and ensuring a conflict minerals free supply chain.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration & Communication: You will work closely with procurement, R&D, operations, and compliance to integrate sustainability into everyday decision-making, while contributing to the documentation and presentations that communicate our progress internally.

What we offer you:

  • Rewards that truly count: Enjoy meaningful rewards that support your everyday life and well-being, including a company mobile phone, a flexible Edenred benefit for lunch, commuting, or wellness services, and comprehensive healthcare through Mehiläinen, enhanced by our health insurance fund for additional coverage and peace of mind.
  • Safety that moves us forward: Build your career with a company rooted in safety since the 1940s, ensuring stability and an environment that empowers you to speak and be heard.
  • Work-life balance: We prioritise work-life balance, providing flexible working hours and a hybrid work model tailored to meet both your needs and those of your team.
  • Purpose that drives change: You'll contribute to solutions that transform global trade, creating environmental and operational innovations. You'll be in the driver's seat of ideas, developing digital technologies that set industry standards and position us as the forerunner.
  • People who move together: You'll collaborate with people who build lasting relationships through global expertise, connections, and a commitment to sustainability.

Become part of our global network of 5,200 professionals across 120+ countries, where your work drives innovation, sustainability, and meaningful impact around the world.

What you bring to the role:

  • Advanced Academic Background: You hold a Master's or postgraduate degree in Sustainability Management, Environmental Science, Materials Science, or a related engineering/energy discipline.
  • Sustainability & Supply Chain Expertise: You have a proven track record in engaging suppliers on environmental topics , emission calculations, sustainability reporting, or human rights.
  • ESG Regulatory Knowledge: You possess a strong understanding of EU ESG regulations or a high level of intrinsic motivation to master the latest developments in the field.
  • Data Analysis & Strategic Thinking: You are confident working with complex data and scenario planning, with the unique ability to translate technical findings into clear, actionable recommendations.
  • Stakeholder Communication & Networking: You are a fluent English speaker with excellent presentation skills and the ability to build strong professional networks across different internal and external teams.
  • Proactive Problem Solving: You bring a solution-oriented mindset and the ability to work independently, suggesting improvements and putting forward new ideas to enhance our sustainability efforts.
  • Collaborative & Adaptive Mindset: You are a proactive team player who can manage multiple projects in parallel, constantly looking for ways to improve your own ways of working and learn new skills.
